Typing test format and evaluation
The Clerk Phase 1 test is a computer-based English typing test evaluated by software on speed and accuracy; key test features are listed below.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Test mode | Computer based |
| Language and font | English, Times New Roman |
| Test duration | 10 minutes |
| Minimum typing speed | 30 net words per minute (NWPM) |
| Marks for typing test | 15 |
| Evaluation | Software-based, considers both speed and accuracy |
How net typing speed is calculated
SKAU counts one word as five strokes (including spaces) and applies deductions for errors and skipped words; the official formula and an example are provided below.
- Gross Strokes = Total typed strokes
- Deduction = (Number of errors + Number of skipped words) ร 5
- Net Strokes = Gross Strokes โ Deduction
- Net Speed (WPM) = Net Strokes รท (5 ร Test duration in minutes)
Example from the official formula sheet: with 2,500 gross strokes, 20 errors and 10 skipped words in a 10-minute test, Deduction = 150 strokes, Net Strokes = 2,350 and Net Speed = 47 WPM.
How the typing test works on the computer
The official step-by-step guide explains the test process and login procedure on the test software.
- Open the typing test software on the desktop and check that the allotted keyboard and mouse work properly.
- Select the declaration confirming you have checked the keyboard and mouse, then click Next.

- The typing window has two parts: the upper part shows the text to be typed and the lower part is where you type; press the Space Bar to start the test โ the text appears and the timer starts together.
